Hypothyroidism, Fiber and Weight Loss

Posted: October 14, 2018

Many people, especially women over 40, suffer from hypothyroidism. Women are 5-8 times more likely to be affected by thyroid disease and the numbers are rising. Hypothyroidism, fiber and weight loss go hand in hand.

As with any diet, fiber is a crucial component of ridding the body of excess weight. Fiber supplements as in psyllium can actually slow the glycemic load of high carb meals and not let blood sugar levels spike.

Although I recommend staying away from high carb meals, this can be helpful on occasion if you suffer from constipation.

Constipation is common in women that suffer from hypothyroidism. Digestion issues are one of the most common complaints with women over 40 and there are small daily habits that can help.

Below is a list of foods that can help you stay “regular” and help you take in some key nutrients while keeping you full, and assisting with weight loss. Aim for approximately 25- 30 grams per day from sources other than bread, grains and pasta! Go for fruits and veggies first.

Avocados

Artichokes

Split Peas

Black Beans

Pears

Lentils

Chick Peas

Oranges

Quinoa

Squash

When you have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism, fiber and weight loss are a piece of the intricate puzzle to wellness.

I was diagnosed years ago with hypothyroidism. I was gaining weight and exercising daily! I was also cutting out too many calories and not getting enough sleep.

Sleep and food intake are the two biggest factors in regulating immune function and healing autoimmune issues. Hashimoto’s autoimmune thyroiditis can be diagnosed even before you have low thyroid function.
