Commonly Asked Questions about Diets

Posted: February 14, 2020

Here are the most commonly asked questions about diets.

With 20+ years in the diet and nutrition industry…I get asked a lot of the same questions.
And, as a contributing member to Quora, (a platform where you can ask ANYTHING!) I get asked even more of the same questions.

So, today I’ll try to keep it simple.

I’ll ask the questions I get asked the most often…and give my answers to the best of my knowledge and experience.

MY MOST COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT DIETS:

1. What is the best diet?
There is no diet that fits everyone. Your needs will change throughout your life. From hormones to age, to deficiencies, energy levels and whether you have an injury or illness…one diet does not fit all, all of the time, forever.

2. How much protein do we need?
Even though it is slightly lower than the RDA…I coach people to get approximately 1 gram of protein per lean pound of bodyweight. With so many people cutting calories, and living busy lives…most of us are deficient. A lack of protein will mean that your muscles can wither away.

Unfortunately, they are already doing that if you are not strength training. And, if you ARE strength training? You need at least that much protein to repair and rebuild your muscles.

3. What one thing can people do to be healthier?
Simple. EAT MORE PLANTS! Every person that I have ever looked at their food journal was deficient in fiber. Plants are the only place to get fiber.
Fiber is necessary to shuttle out toxins and vegetables and fruits, nuts and seeds are loaded with vitamins, minerals and fibers to keep your immune system working hard.

Each woman needs approximately 25 grams of fiber per day. Each man needs about 35 grams.

4. What is the best way to track what you eat?
Although I am not a “calorie counter,” I do think that every once in a while it’s good to check out exactly what your nutrient intake looks like.
Even if you do it for a week, most of us eat in patterns and it’s a great way to see what you’re getting and what you may be missing.
The FREE MyFitness Pal app is the best choice.

5. How do you determine how many calories you need?
I coach people to “eat for what they are doing next”
Other than when I did a competition in a bodybuilding division, I have never really counted calories since I was in my early 30’s when that’s what all the girls did!

I coach people to eat a variety of foods that are nutrient dense, and to eat for energy!

If you have a super physically active day? You need more carbs.
If you have a more sedentary day and are sitting down a lot, driving or do not workout?

You need more healthy fats.
Protein requirements always stay the same (see above) and if you work out hard, or have a very strenuous manual labor job, then you need a little more protein.
This is also when you should supplement with a protein shake before and after activity to facilitate the repair and rebuilding of the muscles you just used!
