Preventing Heart Disease in Women

Posted: February 16, 2025

Heart disease remains a leading cause of death in women, making prevention essential. Even if you have a family history of heart disease, it does not mean you have to succumb to it. Preventing heart disease in women can be done with mindful steps so that you live a long and strong life, with a healthy heart.

Regular cardiovascular exercise, such as brisk walking or swimming, strengthens the heart. Include strength training and remember, your heart is a muscle that needs to be worked! It’s ok to get your heart rate up regularly, and those handy little wrist trackers are great to monitor heart health. However, they are not a “medical guide” just a tool that helps.

Women should also monitor blood pressure and cholesterol levels regularly. If you get winded easily from minor activities or have sudden changes in heart rate, get checked by your doctor.

Quitting smoking, reducing alcohol consumption, and managing stress through mindfulness can further reduce heart disease risks. Listen to calming music, meditate and get plenty of time unplugged to keep stress lowered while connecting with nature.

Maintaining a heart-healthy diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, whole grains, and eating a wide variety of vegetables helps lower cholesterol levels. Eat meats such as bison, and grass fed beef to further boost Omega 3’s. Fish oil, and krill oil are also good to supplement with, but check with your health care practitioner before taking anything new, especially if you are already on medication.

Maintaining a strong heart is up to you! Make adjustments to your health and maintain a healthy weight if you have a family history of heart disease.
