Tis the season to be merry, while eating and drinking our way through New Years Day. The day that we make that resolution and wish we had been more aware of preventing holiday weight gain.
Most people try to fix something after it is broken. Prevention is easier than fixing, and preventing holiday weight gain is possible with a few simple steps.
Of course, we are going to say “yes” to cocktails, and stay up too late. Not only does this set us up for bingeing tomorrow, it sets our hormones up for weight gain.
Here are 5 steps that can keep you on track and be sure that you don’t gain a single pound by New Years.
- Drink more water than ever.
A body that is hydrated works more efficiently, rids itself of waste quicker and flushes toxins out sooner. - Drink a protein shake before you head out for the night. Every time you have a cocktail, drink a glass of water between to keep you hydrated and ward off a next day disaster.
Protein slows the rate that alcohol goes into your bloodstream, but only if you have it BEFORE you have your first drink. Besides the fact that protein keeps you full and less apt to binge, this necessary nutrient is lacking in most diets in the first place. I LOVE the taste of hormone and gluten-free BioTrust Protein Powder in a smoothie. My husband and I start every day with a shake and have one every time we are on our way out for the night.
3. If you are going to drink, do it wisely. DON’T DRIVE obviously, and stick to low sugar drinks to make sure you don’t add the unnecessary calories. Drink vodka or gin or tequila with soda and a splash of ginger beer. Add a lime or lemon and sip, don’t slam! Red wine is another great choice and these options keep your waistline slim.
Be sure to stay away from the drinks that pack on the pounds as in White Russians and Egg Nog drinks. The holidays are a time for sharing with friends our goals and accomplishments…NOT planning on how to undo our bad habits!
