Strengthen your glutes with these exercises

Posted: June 21, 2026

Strong glutes are one of the biggest keys to staying active, balanced, pain-free, and independent as we age. The best way to prevent falls, and to be able to move with ease…is to strengthenĀ  your glutes with these exercises.

Your glute muscles support your hips, knees, lower back, posture, and balance while helping power everyday movements like walking, climbing stairs, standing up, and lifting.

Unfortunately, years of sitting can cause the glutes to become weak and underactive, forcing other areas of the body to compensate.

This often leads to low back pain, hip discomfort, knee problems, and poor balance over time.

The good news is that glutes respond incredibly well to strength training, and a few simple exercises can make a huge difference in how you move and feel.

One of the best exercises for strengthening the glutes is the Step Up.Ā

This movement improves balance, coordination, and lower-body strength while mimicking real-life activities like climbing stairs.

To perform it, stand in front of a bench or sturdy step. Place one foot on the bench and press through your heel to lift yourself up while keeping your torso upright.

Slowly lower yourself back down and repeat on the opposite side.

Step-ups are excellent for building strength safely while also improving stability as we age.

Another powerhouse exercise is the Hip Thrust. This move directly targets the glutes and helps strengthen the muscles that support the lower back and pelvis.

Sit on the floor with your upper back resting against a bench and your feet planted firmly on the ground.

Make sure the bench does not move and is stable.

You can also start with simple hip thrusters while laying on the ground as in the picture above.

Drive through your heels and lift your hips upward while squeezing your glutes at the top.

Lower slowly and repeat.

Hip thrusts are one of the most effective exercises for rebuilding glute strength and improving posture and power.

Finally, Resistance Band Monster Walks are fantastic for waking up the smaller glute muscles that stabilize your hips and improve balance. Rarely do we walk from side to side, and that is why these muscles need to wake up!

Place a resistance band over your knees, soften your knees as if sitting back into a chair but with chest upright.

Step from side to side while keeping tension on the band.

These may look simple, but they are incredibly effective for strengthening the outer glutes and hips, and protecting the knees and lower back.

Strong glutes are about much more than appearance.

They are your foundation for moving confidently, staying strong, and maintaining your independence for years to come.

NOTE: Tight glutes are mainly due to tight hamstrings. These are the muscles on the back of your legs that stretch from the back of your knee, up to the bottom of your butt.

When these are tight…all movement is restricted.

Use a towel, a belt or an exercise band, and perform this exercise.
Lay on your back with your left knee bent for stability, with the foot on the floor.

Now, take the band, and loop it around your other foot while trying to extend the leg upward while pulling the leg towards you….stretching the hamstring. This is a HARD exercise at first, but will help you stretch out those tight hamstrings that contribute to other pain issues.
