Carbohydrates are one of the most confusing foods on the planet these days. From low carb, to carb loading with athletes, to simple sugars to alcohol….what are the good carbohydrates and what are the bad? Good Carbs vs. Bad Carbs for Weight Loss is a conversation that I have regularly with the women in my gym.
We know know that a low carbohydrate diet is BETTER for weight loss, but do you know what exactly that means?
A salad of mixed greens, carrots, peppers, onions, cucumbers and tomatoes is an all carbohydrate meal…however it is low density, low calorie and zero protein. So, not only will it NOT put on any weight and is healthy, it will also NOT keep you full as it doesn’t have any protein in it. (protein is needed to keep you full, nourishes every cell in your body AND will keep your metabolic rate running on high while you keep from wasting muscle tissue).
The carbohydrates that should be omitted completely that cause a raise in blood sugar, spike insulin levels and promote fat storage are bread (of any kind including whole grain), pasta, rice, pastries, cookies, bagels, muffins and anything that is pre-made.
Now, on the other hand if you are making any of these at home with almond flour or coconut flour, ghee or coconut oil, and know every single ingredient in it…then that is different. However most overweight people ARE overweight due to the amount of unhealthy carbs they consume, the small amount of protein, and that they have little muscle on their bodies resulting in a sluggish metabolic rate.
