Healthy fats are a needed nutrient for many reasons. We have gone from the dieters age years ago where we tried to not eat any fat, to knowing now that healthy fats are needed for our systems to work properly. Unfortunately, not all of us know what fats are good and which are not.
First, there are certain fats that should be completely avoided. Trans fats are the worst possible scenario when it comes to fats. Packaged foods and a lot of restaurant foods contain these fats that have been proven to contribute to heart disease and obesity. Most of the foods that trans fats are in are things that should be avoided. Baked goods and snack crackers are loaded with these culprits.
Second, the best sources of healthy fats come from plants and fish. Avocados, coconut oil, olive oil, and nut butters. Ground flax and chia seeds are great additions that are loaded with Omega 3’s and fiber and are a great addition to any healthy diet. These are the linoleic acids that the body needs to consume as it does not produce it on it’s own. Fatty fishes as meals or in supplement forms if you don’t care for fish are crucial to supreme health and combating inflammation.
The reason that people fear fats stems mainly from the fact that they contain 9 calories per gram where as protein and carbohydrates contain 4. If you are consuming the right types of fats and are not overdoing it with other foods, then healthy fats are needed for a number of reasons. Cells, skin, and balancing hormones are a few of the more important reasons that healthy amounts of fat are essential.
Fats are your friend if you know which ones to eat, and which ones to stay away from. I think we all know that pastries, fried foods, chips, and cheap hamburger is not what will keep us healthy, energized and trim. What we need to add more of is nut butters, avocados and olive oils. If we don’t consume fish often, then we should supplement with a reputable fish oil, that is purity checked and free from mercury. I prefer Isagenix Brand Fish Oil…High EPA and DHA which are needed for heart health and overall wellness.
The more you learn about how to stay healthy, the easier it is to apply to your lifestyle. Healthy fats should be a part of your plan to achieve overall health, while trans fats and excessive fat intake will make you look and feel poorly.
