How to tone up after 40

Posted: January 30, 2024

One of the topics I get asked about regularly as a woman is how to tone up after 40. The fact of the matter is that the definition of the word “tone,” is how firm your muscles are at rest. So, if you carry a lot of body fat, or, if you are inactive, you will never see tone.

However, the bigger key is this. When you want to see your shape change, and you cut out too many calories, you store fat. This makes you look flabbier.

Now, if all you do is cardio, AND, cut calories, you’ll even have more flab as you start to conserve fat, and waste muscle.

After owning a gym for 11 years, and coaching only women for 30+, it is amazing how many women refuse to believe what I am telling them. That is why year after year, they come to me again, to tell me that they cannot believe how much weight they have gained – despite dieting and walking.

PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO THIS KEY – AND THEN PRACTICE IT.

Until you shift how you look at what food does, and how exercise can change your shape – your body will never change. It will even store more fat if you continue to keep counting calories, and steps. Focus on feeding it protein, and using your muscles.

The key to how to tone up after 40, is to eat a moderate amount of protein, carbs, and healthy fats, and to strength train. When you challenge your muscles with body weight exercises, dumbbells, barbells, or even exercise bands, your muscles will grow. But, they will only get stronger, and firmer if you feed them enough protein to facilitate recovery and rebuilding.

Protein is the building block of muscle. When you cut out too much, you lose muscle mass.

This slows down your metabolic rate. If you are sedentary, or only do cardio, this also will deplete muscle tissue. Doing this will also cause a drastic reduction of how fast your body metabolizes calories.

The simple equation is: Challenge your muscles + Eat about 1 gram of protein per lean pound of bodyweight = a leaner, firmer body.

I created a program for women over 40 to build lean muscle tissue at home.

Here’s me at 62 years young!

This workout can be done in under 10 minutes daily, and will create slim, strong muscles.
