As a female wellness and fitness coach, I get asked regularly, “What is the best diet for women over 40?” The answer to that question, is that there is no single diet that fits ALL women over 40.
There are too many things that factor into what your “diet” should be. First, let’s look at whether you are sedentary or very active. Secondly, let’s talk about hormones, and whether you’ve gone through Menopause. Third, let’s cover things such as energy levels, if you’ve dieted before, or the biggie – how much muscle you have.
What women are asking is “What can I eat so that I don’t gain any more weight?” They are asking because most likely, they have cut calories, eliminated entire food groups, tried intermittent fasting, and they still have excess flab.
I would be a millionaire if I had a dollar for every time I recited this. “Eat a whole food diet loaded with produce, a moderate amount of protein, and some healthy fats.” And, “Exercise to build muscle.”
Furthermore, the minute you cut out too many calories, your body goes into “storing fat mode.” If you have only done cardio, or don’t exercise at all, you’re body has already started to lose muscle.
Did you know that how much muscle you have, is directly related to how fast your resting metabolism is? The more muscle you have on your frame, the more you need to eat, and the faster your metabolic rate will be.
Start with eliminating weighing yourself every day.
Next, stop counting calories, and focus on what you are missing. Its most likely fiber from veggies, and protein that prevents muscle wasting.
After you focus on that, plan on starting a strength training program. Do something at first that engages your biggest muscles that you can do at home.
